"Good product overall, but maps should be more reliable" 2009-10-04
By Artur Poghosyanb (IL, USA)
We used this GPS device during our recent visit to Italy. It helped us a lot, we could not even imagine not having GPS - it would just be a big stress. It is very easy to use, the screen size is optimal, but the maps were not very accurate. The device is pretty reliable on main roads, but in smaller towns more than 5-6 times it directed us to a dead-end. Maybe I had to go online and update the maps before using the device, but I did not have time, unfrtunately. I used it also when walking in the city and it reliably brought us back to our car park - we would spend a lot of time trying to find it without the GPS. Overall, this is a great product, but the reliability of maps could be better. This was a good value for money, and I recommend this product.

"Not Great GPS for Italy Travel" 2009-10-02
By ZenReader (washington,dc)
I took two GPS(s) to Italy for my trip from Venice, Florence,Tuscanny, and Rome. Besides the Garmin 275T I also took the TomTom 930 Live. These devices were both up-to-date with all patches and upgrades. I found there was not one review of which GPS was best for Italy. The Garmin was completely useless in Venice. It never found a statelite. Though it searched forever. The TomTom found satetilites and the location within 45 seconds. Using the TomTom in Venice was of limited benefit -it ended up more as a general directional device than step by step to anywere in Venice but still it atleast knew where I was.

In Florence only the TomTom worked and worked well. Unfortunately deep in back streets it did lose statelites so there were times you were on your own. Outside the city and throughout Tuscanny -Siena, Pienza, etc the Tom Tom was amazing. Went to remote vineyards and town down virtually unmarked roads with ease.

The Garmin on the other hand did find statelite too as we left Florence, suburbs, but it did not display near the accuracy of the TomTom when it cam to directions. Side by side after two days -it went in the bag and the Tom Tom won.

In Rome, I tried the Garmin as a walking tool. Again this proved worthless. Walking from the Pantheon to the any site the devices became radomly confused as to what direction I was heading, showing me on all sorts for different streets and turned a bewildering set of directions. I would rate it worthless for anything other that seeing how far something was away. For example .7 miles walk to the Gardens, etc.

Note. I love Garmin here in the states and prefer its interface to the TomTom. If your going to Italy though either buy a TomTom or if you rent a car all the providers offer TomTom (Avis etc)

 "Garmin Nuvii" 2009-10-01

Having both US and Europe maps is a definite plus. We used it in Europe on a trip through Germany, Czech Republic and Austria and it found every location. Quite satisfied!

"Accurate, Portable and absolutely Affordable!" 2009-09-28
By J. Monty (Colorado, USA)
This little baby is an absolute gem! My wife and I just returned from a two week trip around Europe and boy were we glad we had the Garmin Nuvi 275t. We wanted to bring a GPS with us to help us navigate the back-roads of Normandy, France but it had to be small/light as we were flying carry-on only. Further requirements were that it had to be affordable, include accurate maps of Europe pre-installed, and work for pedestrian (on-foot) navigation. The 275t fits all those requirements and more. Thanks to Garmin we navigated the French countryside like a couple of locals. We found the maps to be very precise and loved the easy integration with Google maps. Before we left home I had spent about 30 minutes finding hotels/B&B's/train stations and the main attractions that we wanted to visit, and with only a few clicks of the mouse I was able to upload all the locations directly into the 275t (includes USB cable). You have to install a browser plug-in for Windows first but that only takes a minute and it also works great! The 275t is perfect for traveling in the US/Europe as it is compatible with with the different voltages 120v(USA) - 220v(Europe) so that is one less thing to worry about. We picked up the optional outlet charger from Amazon as well (which included compatibility with a number of outlet types). Also the included car-charger worked fine in our car rental in France (as I've heard the car cigarette lighters are standard everywhere).

A couple points you will want to note about this unit: You'll want to keep it plugged in via the car-charger when being used in a vehicle. I say this because we found it updated faster and had much better reception when plugged in. Therefore when being used in pedestrian mode it won't update nearly as quickly as it does when being used in the car (it still works well). My wife got a little grumpy about this fact, as in the car if you miss a turn it was no big deal you just kept driving and the unit would quickly calculate a new route for you. On foot this doesn't work the same way, for two reasons really. First it doesn't re-calculate the routes nearly as quickly, and second, on foot you aren't moving as quickly so it doesn't notice you missed a turn right away (all GPS units have a margin of error - something like 5 - 10ft). This is no big deal really just follow the route it has planned for you and you will be just fine -- on foot if you miss a turn, go-back and make the turn it had planned for you (so your wife doesn't get angry and demand you ask a non-English speaker for different directions).

In addition to using this on foot and in the car, we also used it while on the train to help us find the nearest stop to the location we wanted to visit (it worked fine for this purpose -- just turn it on near the window to ensure quality reception). Overall an amazing tool to have with you on your trip to Europe and excellent in the US as well!

 "Italy trip" 2009-09-28
By K. Godfrey
I bought the Garmin 275 on Amazon for about $50 less than anywhere else, and we were leaving for Italy in four days. We rented a car, and drove many miles. THANK GOODNESS we had the Garmin with the European maps! I had three passengers and we had fun with the Garmin while we were driving on the autostrada, driving in big cities like Rome and Florence, and while walking to our hotel in Venice or when we were within a block of the Tower of Pisa. I would NEVER go to Europe without it.
